Communication Milestones: 8 Years

Every child grows and develops in their own unique way and at their own pace.

 

Milestones are simply helpful guidelines, and it’s okay if your child reaches them a little earlier or later than others.

8 Years

Speech Fluency: 

  • Disfluent less than 10% of the time

  • Uses fillers (“uh”, “um”)

Articulation:

  • Speech is 100% intelligible

  • Accurately produces all vowels and consonants including: m, n, h, w, b, p, t, d, f, v, ng, k, g, y, sh, zh, ch, j, l, s, z, r & th and blends with w, l, s & r

Speaking & Expressive Language:

  • Uses school-related vocabulary

  • Speaks with mature grammar

  • Summarizes stories with detail

  • Provides multiple definitions of words

  • Tells riddles and jokes

  • Counts backward; knows date, months, days of week

Listening & Understanding: 

  • Pays attention in groups Understands the concept of space

  • Follows 3–4 step directions

  • Answers difficult questions about stories

  • Starts to understands idioms, metaphors, multiple meanings

Literacy Skills: 

  • Starts reading chapter books fluently

  • Uses strategies to decode unfamiliar words

  • Reads with accuracy, expression, and pacing

  • Writes structured paragraphs with punctuation; revises writing with support

  • Spells most high-frequency words correctly and applies spelling patterns

Social Communication & Play:

  • Maintains topic, eye contact, & takes turns

  • Uses appropriate voice volume

  • Gives multi-step directions

  • Uses language to inform, persuade, entertain

  • Responds to evaluative comments, compliments, apologies
