Communication Milestones: 13-14 Years
Every child grows and develops in their own unique way and at their own pace.
Milestones are simply helpful guidelines, and it’s okay if your child reaches them a little earlier or later than others.

13-14 Years
Expressive & Receptive Language:

Uses increasingly abstract language to discuss ideas, beliefs, and hypotheticals

Begins mastering complex grammar structures and figurative language (sarcasm, irony, idioms)

Adapts communication style depending on context (casual with peers, formal in school)

Persuades and debates with more sophisticated arguments

Begins experimenting with humor, storytelling, and expressive language
Social Communication:

Navigates new and shifting peer groups; explores identity through language Interprets and uses sarcasm, jokes, and teasing appropriately

Begins to understand and manage peer pressure and social expectations

Uses language to express emotions and resolve conflicts

Starts recognizing subtle nonverbal cues (facial expressions, tone of voice)
Literacy Skills:

Distinguishes between fact, opinion, bias, and propaganda

Makes inferences and supports them with evidence from the text

Teens develop communication skills at varying rates influenced by personality, environment, & experiences. Social media & digital communication add new layers of complexity to teenage language use.
