Developmental Milestones: 4 to 5 Years

Every child grows and develops in their own unique way and at their own pace.

 

Milestones are simply helpful guidelines, and it’s okay if your child reaches them a little earlier or later than others.

4-5 Years

Fine Motor

  • Drawing recognizable pictures (person with body parts)

  • Copying shapes (circle, cross, square, sometimes triangle)

  • Beginning to write some letters (especially in their name)

  • Using scissors more accurately

  • Coloring within lines (with improving control)

  • Managing buttons, zippers, or simple fasteners

Gross Motor:

  • Running, jumping, and climbing with confidence

  • Hopping on one foot

  • Skipping or beginning to skip

  • Catching and throwing a ball more accurately

  • Balancing on one foot for several seconds

Play & Social Skills:

  • Engaging in complex pretend play with peers

  • Playing games with rules and taking turns

  • Developing friendships and showing preferences

  • Understanding sharing and cooperation

  • Showing empathy and problem-solving skills

Sensory Processing

  • Participating in a wide range of play activities

  • Increased tolerance for different textures, sounds, and environments

  • Improved ability to stay regulated during daily routines

  • Still may show preferences or sensitivities

Self Care Skills:

  • Dressing independently (including most fasteners)

  • Using the bathroom independently

  • Washing hands and basic hygiene with minimal help

  • Using utensils neatly and managing mealtimes

  • Helping with simple household tasks

Your child is preparing for school and becoming more independent, coordinated, and socially aware. This year brings exciting growth in learning, play, and daily skills!
