Communication Milestones: 6 Years

Every child grows and develops in their own unique way and at their own pace.

 

Milestones are simply helpful guidelines, and it’s okay if your child reaches them a little earlier or later than others.

6 Years

Speech Fluency: 

  • Disfluencies are relaxed & occur less than 10% of the time; 1 to 2 repetitions of the sound/word; child is unaware of them

  • Uses fillers “uh” or “um”

  • May have some bouts of stuttering for a few weeks and then stop

Articulation:

  • Speech is 100% intelligible

  • Accurately produces all vowels and consonants including: m, n, h, w, b, p, t, d, f, v, ng, k, g, y, sh, zh, ch, j, l, and blends with w & l

Speaking & Expressive Language:

  • Uses personal & possessive pronouns correctly

  • Uses regular past & future tenses

  • Makes predictions, justifies decisions, provides solutions

  • Explains objects and their use

  • Talks about past & future events

Listening & Understanding: 

  • Classifies objects by trait-form, color, use

  • Follows 3-step directions

  • Understands short stories, answers questions

  • Answers “What happens if...?” questions

  • Understands color, shape, size, position, quantity, quality, time concepts

Early Literacy Skills Ages 5-6: 

  • Names all uppercase and lowercase letters

  • Associates letters with their sounds

  • Counts syllables, labels first sounds in words

  • Starts to blend and segment sounds in words

  • Uses invented spelling (“kt” for “cat”)

  • Draws pictures & tells stories about them

Social Communication & Play:

  • Uses language to reason and persuade

  • Tells stories with clear sequences

  • Gives praise, negotiates roles & turn-taking

  • Gives multi-step directions

  • Responds appropriately to compliments and apologies
