Communication Milestones: 15-16 Years

Every child grows and develops in their own unique way and at their own pace.

 

Milestones are simply helpful guidelines, and it’s okay if your child reaches them a little earlier or later than others.

15-16 Years

Expressive & Receptive Language: 

  • Expresses nuanced thoughts and opinions clearly in both speech and writing

  • Understands and uses figurative & abstract language naturally

  • Plans and delivers extended presentations and arguments effectively

  • Adjusts vocabulary and tone for different audiences (friends, teachers, family)

  • Engages in reflective and hypothetical conversations (e.g., “What if…” questions)

Social Communication:

  • Demonstrates advanced perspective-taking and empathy in conversations

  • Effectively negotiates peer conflicts & complex social situations

  • Uses humor, irony, & sarcasm to connect or distance from others

  • Balances group belonging with emerging sense of individuality

  • Recognizes and respects social boundaries and norms

Literacy Skills:

  • Writes clear, well-organized analytical, argumentative, and narrative essays Integrates quotes & paraphrased material smoothly into writing

  • Reads & analyzes a wide range of literary & informational texts

  • Understands complex themes, character development, & symbolism

  • Evaluates how author's choices (structure, word choice, tone) impact meaning

  • Compares texts from different genres, time periods, perspectives

  • Analyzes persuasive techniques, bias, & credibility of sources
