17-18 Years

Expressive & Receptive Language:

Uses highly sophisticated language for academic, social, and professional purposes
Excels in persuasive speaking, debate, and storytelling with complex narratives and subplots
Employs language to explore identity, values, and worldview

Social Communication:

Navigates adult social relationships, including workplace and romantic interactions
Demonstrates advanced emotional intelligence and conflict resolution skills
Interprets and uses subtle nonverbal cues (microexpressions, sarcasm, tone)
Communicates assertively while maintaining respect and tact
Uses language to influence, lead, and inspire others

Literacy Skills:

Mastery of style-shifting: formal writing, informal texting, professional communication
Understands and produces nuanced humor, irony, and satire

Teens develop communication skills at varying rates influenced by personality, environment, & experiences. Social media & digital communication add new layers of complexity to teenage language use.
