Communication Milestones: 7  Years

Every child grows and develops in their own unique way and at their own pace.

 

Milestones are simply helpful guidelines, and it’s okay if your child reaches them a little earlier or later than others.

7 Years

Speech Fluency: 

  • Disfluent less than 10% of the time

  • Uses fillers and topic switches

Articulation:

  • Speech is 100% intelligible

  • Accurately produces all vowels and consonants including: m, n, h, w, b, p, t, d, f, v, ng, k, g, y, sh, zh, ch, j, l, s, z, v and blends with w, l, & s

Speaking & Expressive Language:

  • Uses complex sentences

  • Grammar is generally accurate

  • Expresses opinions and clarifies information

  • Asks many how and why questions

  • Tells and retells stories in sequence

  • Uses language for jokes, teasing, debating

Listening & Understanding: 

  • Sustains attention for longer periods

  • Follows 3–4 step directions

  • Answers harder yes/no questions Asks/answers who/what/when/where/why

  • Understands linguistic concepts like: left/right, few, most, seasons

  • Classifies objects by traits

Literacy Skills: 

  • Can blend & segment sounds in words

  • Recognizes & reads most common sight words

  • Self-corrects when reading doesn't make sense

  • Starts using capitalization and punctuation Spells many common words correctly, uses phonetic spelling for others

Social Communication & Play:

  • Checks listener’s understanding

  • Starts and ends conversations well

  • Adapts language based on listener’s knowledge

  • Uses language to inform, persuade, entertain
